Irish president blames Israeli embassy for leaking letter about Iran
On Sunday, Irish President Michael D. Higgins defended his letter to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, emphasizing Iran's "crucial role" in Middle East peace, while accusing Israel's embassy in Dublin of leaking the correspondence to the media. At a press conference in New York, he asserted, “I do indeed, it was certainly the Israeli embassy,” in response to questions about the leak, which the embassy denied. In his July 11 letter, Higgins expressed congratulations and support amid ongoing challenges, highlighting Iran's cultural significance in achieving peace. Irish opposition politicians criticized the letter for its perceived appeasement, while Higgins maintained it was a standard diplomatic outreach. The Israeli embassy labeled Higgins's claims as "baseless" and inflammatory. Ireland, known for its critical stance on Israel, has also recognized a Palestinian state.
