​Sovereignty wins 2025 Kentucky Derby: Live updates and reactions from Churchill Downs

 

Sovereignty made a late charge on a muddy track and raced past the favorite Journalism to win the 151st Kentucky Derby on Saturday at Churchill Downs.

Journalism briefly took the lead in the stretch before Sovereignty, who went off at 7-1 odds, pulled even and then moved past him for a commanding victory in the first leg of racing’s Triple Crown. It was the second Derby victory for trainer Bill Mott and the first for jockey Junior Alvarado.

“It’s more than even a dream come true,” Alvarado said.
